Weekly Harvest Report: Weeks 3, 4, 5, and 6 of 2025

Some of you may have noticed that I haven't posted a harvest report for the past few weeks. If you've been following the podcast, you'll know that I've been battling a nasty cold while also prioritising job searching after becoming unemployed. However, we're back with an update on what we've harvested over the last few weeks and the value of this homegrown produce.

This Month’s Harvest

Eggs – 48

That’s a lot of eggs, isn’t it? Our four chickens are real powerhouses in the garden, and their eggs are an absolute delight. It’s surprising how quickly we go through them! At an economy supermarket, these eggs would have cost us £11.16, whereas a high-end supermarket would have charged £17.00.

Turmeric – 150g

Turmeric is one of the edible indoor plants we grow, and its fragrant tubers offer fantastic health benefits while providing a delicious seasoning for many dishes. The cost of this at an economy supermarket would be £1.50, while a premium store would charge £2.20.

Leeks – 8

Leeks are a winter staple in our household, and we absolutely love having them in the garden. They are used in so many dishes, and homegrown leeks taste far superior to store-bought ones. These would have cost £5.56 at an economy supermarket or £8.26 at a premium retailer.

Brussels Sprouts – 500g

Another winter staple, often associated with Christmas more than any other vegetable. Personally, I find them delicious, though I know they have their fair share of critics! At an economy supermarket, these would cost 85p, while a premium store would charge £2.10.

Cabbage – 1

Cabbage is another winter essential, and one head is enough to last my wife and me several meals. At an economy supermarket, this would cost 75p, while a premium retailer would price it at £1.22.

Carrots – 6

One of the best things about my Vegepod is the protective cover that allows us to continue growing food throughout the colder months. These carrots were sown last year but have continued to grow beautifully. They would cost 39p at an economy supermarket or £1.40 at a premium store.

Parsnips – 6

Another winter staple, the good old parsnip! These would cost 55p at an economy supermarket or £2.10 at a premium store.

Salad Leaves and Herbs

As with previous weeks, we’ve been harvesting salad leaves and herbs as needed. Though we don’t weigh them, they form a daily part of our meals. We estimate their value at 75p for salad leaves and 52p for herbs from an economy supermarket, or £2 for salad leaves and 80p for herbs from a premium retailer.

Monthly Totals

Adding up the total harvest value over the past few weeks:

  • Economy shop equivalent: £20.51
  • Premium shop equivalent: £34.08

Combining these with our previous totals:

  • Economy shop equivalent: £31.70
  • Premium shop equivalent: £53.08

We’re making steady progress toward our goal, and as the year unfolds, we look forward to even more bountiful harvests!
